Graduate Awards, 2007-2008
Mary Haga Award - Applications due February 8th,
2008
Agnes Hansen Award - Applications due October 19th, 2007
Agnes Hansen Award - Applications due May 9th, 2008
Xi Chapter of Sigma Delta Epsilon has established awards in memory of Agnes Hansen and Mary Haga. These awards are given to defray some of the costs that female graduate students incur while traveling to national or other major scientific meetings where they are presenting the results of their research.
Any female graduate student in Minnesota engaged in scientific
research is eligible to apply but, other factors being equal, preference
will be
given to active members of Xi Chapter. The applicant should have
limited other support for attending scientific meetings. The funds may
be
used for travel expenses and registration fees, not for
room and board. The usual award is in the range of $200 to $300.
A notice
of abstract acceptance must be provided before disbursement
of the award. Your meeting must take place after the award deadline,
not before. To apply for the award, please submit the following:
- A cover letter stating the reasons (both scientific and financial) you want this award, and listing previous presentations at national or major meetings. If this will be your first meeting, please indicate this. Include an itemized estimate of your registration and travel expenses only for the meeting. (Room and board cannot be funded.) Please indicate whether you will be traveling by auto, train, bus, or plane, and any travel restrictions that apply. Include the meeting location and dates. If you are a member of Xi Chapter, SDE, please note this. Also include the name and email address of the advisor sending your recommendation letter (see below).
- A brief resume or curriculum vitae describing your educational and scientific training, honors, awards, membership in scientific, professional, or honor organizations, and scientific publications (if any). Include all degrees and dates they were awarded or are expected, and how many years you have been in your program.
- A copy of the abstract of the work you have submitted for presentation, on an official meeting abstract form if possible. Include a copy of the official
letter of acceptance if
you have one, or state when you expect to be notified of the abstract's
acceptance or rejection.
- A brief description of the data being presented that can be understood by someone from another discipline, no
more than one page in length, double-spaced . Area-specific jargon should be avoided or explained. Include: how the data were collected, type of data, and your specific contribution if it’s a collaborative effort.
- A letter of recommendation from your advisor confirming your intent to participate in the meeting, commenting on your technical ability and potential, and listing any other financial support that would be available from the department or research grants for travel to this meeting. Please have your advisor email this letter directly to awards.xi@gwis.org, preferably as a pdf document, by the application deadline.
Recipients of these awards will be expected to submit a brief written report about their experience at the meeting. This report or a summary of it may be published in the newsletter and website and will be made available to the membership of SDE and to the donor(s) of the award funds. In addition, the awardee should expect to be asked to present their research at one of the monthly SDE meetings. The awards will be made based on both scientific merit and financial need. Submit items 1-4 listed above as one document, Word or pdf (preferred). Please email questions and/or your complete application to:
